Way back on December 5th of last year, a Fox Sparrow was noted ground-feeding in Scott Singer and Jessica McNally's South Side Easton backyard. The bird continued almost daily throughout the winter and was still being seen in March. I asked Scott if I could come to see it and he was fine with it. So I stopped there on late Saturday afternoon and watched the area under a row of white pine trees. After about an hour wait, the bird dropped in and started feeding on the seed spread on the ground. Its intricate markings and reddish coloration make it one of my favorite sparrows.
Other birds seen there while waiting were a 'fly-by' male Northern Harrier, a Cooper's Hawk, a Common Raven, 21 Dark-eyed Juncos, 26 Common Grackles, a Red-winged Blackbird, an American Robin, and a very strongly-marked Song Sparrow.
