Black-bellied Plover in Northampton County! ~ May 3, 2024

A morning walk at Jacobsburg State Park was fairly quiet, but there were some interesting birds among the 46 species that cooperated for photos. These included Scarlet Tanager, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, and Baltimore Oriole.

Other birds of note included Common Merganser, Great Blue Heron, American Kestrel, Eastern Phoebe, Great Crested Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Wood Thrush, Eastern Towhee, Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Parula, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Just after noon, I stopped at the flooded field just east of the Christian Springs Road pond and did a double-take when I spotted a Black-bellied Plover there! The bird was beginning to change into its breeding plumage. I got some long distance, mediocre documentation photos of it.

According to eBird, the last Northampton County sighting was eight years ago in 2016.
