New Jersey Trip for Scissor-tailed Flycatcher! ~ October 1, 1984
I drove into New Jersey to see the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that was in Mercer County Park. Since I had never been west of Kentucky at this time, this was my first look at this neat bird. It was surprisingly tame.

Ontario, Canada Trip for Owls! ~ January 13-15, 1984
January 13, 1984
On Friday the 13th, Ron and Karen Wagner and I headed for southern Ontario in Canada where an owl invasion had been reported.

The next morning, we took the ferry out through the ice to Amherst Island. Several Snowy Owls were spotted out on the ice during the ferry crossing. In the "Owl Woods", a small woodlot near some large fields, we saw a roosting Boreal Owl and several Northern Saw-whet Owls. The Boreal Owl was cleverly tucked away in a roost tree where a photo didn't do it justice.

An adult Snowy Owl was on a telephone pole along one of the island roads.

We returned to the mainland and drove north along Route 6. Near Colebrook, we spotted our first Great Gray Owl, which eventually perched right next to the road.

January 15, 1984
On the 15th, we took the ferry back out to Amherst Island for one last time before heading home. Several Rough-legged Hawks circled in a small kettle over one of the roads on the island.

Later, we watched a Northern Shrike impale a mouse on a thorn in one of the bushes in a hedgerow. A Barrow's Goldeneye was spotted near the Thousand Islands Bridge on the way back into the U.S.

Ontario and Michigan Trip ~ May 21, 1983
The goal of this trip was to bird Point Pelee National Park and then drive up to north-central Michigan to hopefully see Kirtland's Warbler. I drove up through New York and stopped at Niagara Falls to see the falls.

I left Niagara Falls and drove to Point Pelee National Park near Leamington.

A stop at the West Point Beach parking lot produced my first Black Tern. A Chipping Sparrow was in the "Sparrow Field". A walk out on the Marsh Boardwalk yielded Swamp Sparrow and Marsh Wren.

A Lincoln's Sparrow was found during a second stop back at West Point Beach.
I spent the next two nights in a Leamington area motel.

I went down to "The Point", the very tip of the peninsula. This is the first piece of land the birds see as they're flying north across Lake Erie. On the shoreline were my first Bonaparte's Gulls and Common Terns.

A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was perched by the Visitors Center. A Mourning Warbler was found in "Tilden's Woods" along with a Canada Warbler.

Later, back at the Visitors Center, an Orchard Oriole was present. A Semipalmated Plover was in a field at Hillman Marsh. In a snag behind the Pelee Motor Inn was a Black-crowned Night-Heron.

I returned to "The Point" first thing in the morning, which produced Hooded Merganser, Whimbrel, and Forster's Tern. The "Woodland Trail" held Alder Flycatcher and Blackpoll Warbler.
I left Point Pelee and began the long drive west and north to north-central Michigan.

Ontario and Michigan Trip ~ May 25, 1983
I spent the day along the roads adjoining the Jack Pine tracts, hoping to get a look at a Kirtland's, but was unsuccessful. New birds I did see in those areas included Wood Duck and Vesper Sparrow. Other birds seen there included Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
