I got a call from Arlene Koch who told me that her friend, Betsy Mescavage, was pretty sure that she had a Dickcissel coming to her backyard feeders. She gave me her number and told me to give her a call. I did that, and she invited me to come over. I got to her house around 1:30 PM. While watching her feeders, I saw numbers of American Goldfinches and House Finches, plus a Hairy Woodpecker, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, and a Carolina Wren. About a half-hour after I arrived, the bird landed on one of the feeders. It WAS a Dickcissel! Hints of black on the yellow breast confirmed it to be a first-year male. She told me to open the window to get photos, which I did. Here are the better ones that I got.
This was one species that wasn't seen in the county last year. I thanked her for letting me come and see her bird.
