Sora, American Bittern, and Two Virginia Rails at East Bangor Dam! ~ April 20, 2025

After a nice Easter dinner at my daughter's, I drove up to East Bangor Dam to see if I could hear or see the Sora that Mike Schall had reported yesterday. I wanted to get up there on Friday night to try for one, but that didn't work out. I got there a little after 7:00 and saw 17 Wood Ducks, 7 Double-crested Cormorants, 3 Great Blue Herons, a Swamp Sparrow, and at least 64 Red-singed Blackbirds, plus I heard a Virginia Rail calling on the south side of the railroad tracks where I had got a photo of one back on the 6th. After sunset, I heard another Virginia Rail calling on the north side of the tracks, which I got a poor audio recording of, and then an American Bittern called! I kept watching the area it called from and saw it when it briefly perched up in the open. I quickly grabbed a couple photos of it, which I blurred because of the slow shutter speed in the failing light.

As it became dusk, an Eastern Screech Owl called from the woods on the south side of the tracks and a Great Horned Owl called from beyond the north side of the marsh. Soon after, the Sora called! I got an audio recording of it when it called a second time.
I left there and listened at four different nearby spots for Barred Owl but struck out at all four places. I'm guessing that they are probably staying quiet now because of their young.
