Arizona Trip ~ June 10, 2016

Jason agreed to do the mile-plus walk up to the Carrie Nation mine to look for an Aztec Thrush that had been seen there about a week before. Where the Old Baldy and Carrie Nation Mine trails split, a male Elegant Trogon gave great looks.

I thought I was lucky to get nice photos of the male, but I was super-lucky when the male flew over to the female and began copulation!

Not unexpectedly, we didn't find the thrush at the mine, but along the trail we did find Band-tailed Pigeon, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Greater Pewee, Western Wood-Pewee, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Bridled Titmouse, Plumbeous and Hutton's Vireo, Grace's Warbler, Painted Redstart, Hepatic Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Yellow-eyed Junco. We also heard Montezuma Quail.

We returned to the feeders at the Santa Rita Lodge to watch for a possible visit by the Plain-capped Starthroat or the Berylline Hummingbird that had also been seen there about two weeks before. Although neither showed, the area produced nice looks at many of the canyon's birds.

On the mammal front, a White-nosed Coati appeared just beyond the fence.

In mid-afternoon, a Gray Hawk soared over Proctor Road with prey in its talons.

From there, it was a 2-1/4 hour drive back up to the Phoenix airport for our 11:00 PM flight back to Philadelphia.
