Shenandoah National Park ~ August 1980

My wife and I took a trip to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia in August of 1980. It was more of a sightseeing trip than a birding trip.

One of the main attractions there is the Skyline Drive, which winds its way along the top of the mountains and has multiple pulloffs with great views.

We hiked a few of the trails down to the larger waterfalls. This was one of the tallest. For size perspective, note the people sitting midway down the falls.

During a hike to the Gravel Springs Shelter, I spotted a Kentucky Warbler, which was my only life bird of the trip. Sections of the drive in between were surrounded by trees that often acted as an umbrella over the road.

We also toured Luray Caverns.
